Introduced in 1939, the Kapitän was a unitary construction vehicle similar to the Olympia, powered by a 2.5-litre overhead-valve six-cylinder engine. Notably, it featured independent front suspension, a forward-thinking innovation for its time, enhanced further with an anti-roll bar.
When civilian production resumed in 1948, the Kapitän made a comeback based on the 1939 version, with only a few minor differences. This model remained unchanged until 1953. Its successor was mechanically similar but showcased more modern American-style design with abundant chromium plating. Until July 1953, when it was eventually replaced, Opel manufactured just over 48,500 units of this series. However, surviving examples are relatively scarce compared to the equivalent Mercedes models.
