In 1983, Carroll Shelby and Lee Iacocca reunited within the MOPAR family to create a performance-tuned version of the Omni-based Charger. Shelby enhanced the Chrysler 2.2 inline 4-cylinder engine, resulting in 107hp and 127lb-ft of torque. The upgrades included a close ratio 5-speed transaxle and a top gear ratio of 2.78, achieving a sub-10 second 0-60 time and a top speed of 117 mph.
The project’s main focus was on precise handling, noticeable through a faster 14:1 power steering system and shorter, stiffer springs, lowering the car by an inch. Grip was improved with low-profile 195-section Goodyear Eagle GT tires and vented front disc brakes to handle the added speed.
The exterior featured a new body kit with a functional front air dam, ground effect skirts, and ducktail spoiler for increased aerodynamic balance. Identifiable as a Shelby at first glance, the coupe featured special decals and unique paint options, giving it a distinctive and stylish appearance. Overall, the Shelby-boosted Charger proved to be a thrilling combination of power, handling, and style that left a lasting mark in the automotive world.
